Director Miki Magasiva’s documentaries for Tourism New Zealand have launched, generating interest from NZ media outlets.
Called ‘MTV’s Guide to NZ’, the four-minute documentaries include unscripted dialogue and the itinerary is un-contrived, as Magasiva follows local musicians to their favourite dim sim restaurants, music studios and corner pubs.
Created with MTV, each documentary shows New Zealand musicians in their favourite places. Scribe’s tour includes scuba diving for paua, The Mint Chicks stop at Ferg Burgers in Queenstown, and Liam Finn swears by the homemade pies at The Fridge in Kingsland.
In an interview with 3 News, Magasiva says: “This was really exciting and different to other commercials I’ve shot before because there was so much freedom and latitude for the musicians to take us wherever they wanted.”
The New Zealand Herald believes the director's first documentary about Liam Finn is appealing to 16-24 year olds in Australia because it takes them to destinations that would never make it into mainstream travel guides like Lonely Planet or Getaway.
Barry Eddington, regional manager for Australia at Tourism New Zealand, also told the newspaper that musicians Scribe, The Mint Chicks and Liam Finn are so well-known in Australia that, “showing their secrets, their hidden treasures, their home – that's quite powerful".
The documentaries are being rolled out on MTV’s website and on MTV Australia.
