Broadcast Design category winner

It’s been all hands on deck for Iloura, the visual effects and animation powerhouse behind impressive feature films including Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are. This year the company trumped competition rivals to come out on top as Hotshop Broadcast Design category winner.

Although Iloura has attracted much acclaim for its work on Jonze’s cult film masterpiece, the company has also been busy racking up an enviable list of broadcast design work, most notably the beautiful SBS idents, which one Hotshop judge described as “stunningly breathtaking”. Another judge went as far as to say that “Iloura’s SBS work breaks the mould”.

The Melbourne-based company boasts 40 full-time staff and works on VFX, animation and motion design projects for both domestic and international markets.

The design team members, who merge their work with live action and 3D animation when required, work on 2D motion graphic design solutions for a range of clients and products, from TVCs to film and TV series titles.

Recent design work includes the feature film titles for Bran Nue Dae, while the TVC department has just completed Open University and Wolf Blass campaigns and is (at the time of print) working on spots for Target and Nestlè.

In 2009, the film department continued to attract international film interest and won the tender to work exclusively on VFX and animation requirements for Miramax Films’ Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.

Iloura has also recently commenced work on the stereoscopic 3D animation and VFX requirements for James Cameron’s Sanctum, one of Australia’s first stereoscopic (3D) dramatic feature films.

Hot on the back of Iloura’s heels were Broadcast Design category finalists Resolution and zspace.
The year started with a bang for both finalists, whose long list of stunning broadcast work wrapped up 2009 successfully.

Resolution began the year with a refreshing open brief from MTV to create the entire award show broadcast design package for the MTV Awards.

The company created the broadcast title sequence for television program Poker Star, along with the entire broadcast package for the annual IF Awards, celebrating the Australian film and television industry. The team produced the project entirely in-house, from design, illustration, live action, and visual effects to the edit and post.

To top off the year, the BBC invited Resolution to create a brand campaign for the Knowledge Channel. Resolution creative director Tim Dyroff came up with a concept that was visually and emotionally powerful and that would convey the compelling content and breath of programming. The channel identity went on to win a Gold Promax Award.

That same year, not one but four free-to-air networks came to zspace to brand their new channels. Network Ten’s One HD, Nine Network’s Go! and ABC Kids idents lit up screens across the nation in 2009.

With Go! proving a success, the Nine Network came to zspace to rebrand its affiliates with a new look. Foxtel’s Arena came shortly after, with the broadcast designers helping to refresh the channel’s branding and package style.

The company was also heavily involved with promo, campaign and show launches for the networks. Launched this year with the help of zspace’s creative direction and execution, recent work includes B Movies for World Movies, The Drum for ABC News, and Giggles and Hoot and Lullaby for ABC Kids.

The company also made a splash in the advertising space, creating animation work for clients including Freedom, Rhinocort, Rosemount, Ribena and ING.
