Top photographers to lead Magnum Workshop 2012

Three acclaimed Magnum photographers will be sharing their tricks of the trade at a five-day course as part of FotoFreo 2012.

Antoine D'Agata, Donovan Wylie and Magnum's only Australian photographer, Trent Parke, will be leading the first Magnum Workshop of 2012.

Born in Newcastle, NSW, Parke began taking pictures when he was about 12. Today, he works mainly as a street photographer. In 2003, with his wife and fellow photographer Narelle Autio, Parke drove almost 90,000km around Australia to produce his Minutes to Midnight collection showing a sometimes disturbing portrait of 21st century Australia.

The workshop, held at the Fremantle Arts Centre, is a key event at FotoFreo, the City of Fremantle Festival of Photography – a month-long biennial festival that showcases the work of Australian photographers alongside those from Asia, Europe and North America.

Open to 36 international photographers, the workshop will see each Magnum photographer guide their group through a program of group and solo practical, theoretical and editing processes. Participants will be instructed to document local interest stories about Western Australia and apply this to their individual photographic style.

The workshop will take place from March 19. Applications to attend can be made at the Magnum Photos website until February 6.
