Curated by Chris Edser, Scott Heinrich and Yianni Hill, The Australia Project's main objective is to explore and redefine clichéd national stereotypes through arts-based projects, in the hope of revealing a unique perspective on contemporary Australian culture.
Collectively, each initiative aims to engage Australian designers, illustrators, musicians, filmmakers, university students and members of the general public.
The list of pilot projects started so far include:
1) Creative Voices - prominent Australian artists and designers (including Kevin Finn of Finn Design) have been hand-selected and invited to creatively interpret the themes outlined in the Australia Project Brief.
2) Visions (photographic series) - an ongoing endeavour to document the Australian public and their views on the Australia national identity, including photographer Michael Hall.
3) Workshops - conducted in a diverse range of communities throughout each state and territory in Australia. Participants of the Workshop series include students, outback communities, and urban neighbourhoods.
The project will be officially launched at the International AGIdeas Conference in April 2010, and there will also be an exhibition to coincide with the conference presentation.
Project organisers are now in the process of inviting more Australian creatives to participate in the project. The Australia Project is.
