Sydney Film School one-shot workshop

Sydney Film School and the Australian Film Festival have again joined forces to coach budding film makers in the art of 'one shot' filming.

The third annual One Shot Workshop, led by Sydney Film School director and feature film maker Ben Ferris, will take place on March 10.

The workshop – part of the Australian Film Festival – will teach the processes, devices and challenges of the increasingly popular one shot form and will give students the tools to create their own. One shot films are created without cuts or editing.

Ferris, whose debut one shot feature film Penelope won the Van Gogh Award at the 2010 Amsterdam Film Festival and has been released worldwide on DVD, said the one shot technique is risky but rewarding.
“The technique can be used as a dramatic device that experiments with time and space to build tension and a sense of nostalgia,” he said. “It is high-risk film making and can be extremely difficult. If one thing is out of place, you have to abandon the whole film.”

Barry Watterson, director of the Australian Film Festival, said the one shot workshops are always popular with emerging Australian film makers.
“Sydney Film School creates a hands-on experience that inspires and develops the talents of these new creative minds,” he said.
