Resolution brings city to life for Opera Australia

Resolution Design has worked creatively on its first opera with state of the art stage design for Opera Australia's Die Tote Stadt (The Dead City).

Oscar-nominated director Bruce Beresford and designer John Stoddart brought the
production to Australia for the first time with a distinctive propulsion into the 21st century.

Using a combination of live action, photographed and stock imagery, the Resolution design
team (pictured with Bruce Beresford - centre) developed a treatment designed specifically for the opera. The dreamlike atmospheric visuals with projected imagery that seamlessly integrated to create an additional dimension to the performance evoke the darkness and uncertainty of the ancient Belgian city, Bruges.

Director Bruce Beresford said he always knew that the imagery would be complicated.

“I was always wary of involving anyone other than people at the very top of their field,” he said. “We needed people who could do more than just handle the technical complications - but who had a refined sense of design. The Resolution team have been a delight to work with and I know that everyone connected with Opera Australia has been delighted and amazed at the visual elements contrived by the company.”
