Peace by Design

As International Day of Peace, 21 September 2010 approaches, M.A.D. (Making a
Difference) for Peace, founded by Gill Hicks, announces its latest project

Playing for Peace -- an international competition open to design students created by students at TafeSA.

The aim is to get students to find new and engaging ways to deliver a message of peace.

They came up with the project entitled Playing for Peace: M.A.D in Australia whereby they would create designs for a pack of playing cards.

They researched what peace and design have in common, created mood boards and colours of visual expression of peace and also explored famous quotations.

Then each student was dealt a playing card and asked to design the face with symbol and denomination, a dynamic pattern for the back and a three-dimensional pack, and also submit a 150 word rationale about their choice.

The students, along with their peers worldwide, will be submitting their ideas to the
Playing for Peace Competition, submission for which will close at midnight
(London time) on December 17, 2010.

The international judging panel will be announced shortly. The winners of Playing for Peace will be announced on Australia Day, January 26, 2011.
