Adolescent boys think about sex a lot. A lot of adolescent boys think about sex with their stepmother. Then there’s the whole Oedipal thing. Add up all the numbers and Curious Films’ I’m The One was always going to rate highly with at least one of its target audiences.
In fact, it has also rated highly with the awards deciders of Mostra Internazionale D’Arte Cinematogrifica della Biennale di Venezia, the world’s oldest international film festival. The 14 minute film by Paola Morabito has been nominated for an award in the 69th Venice Film Festival.
I’m The One examines the sexual feelings that 17 year old Wolf feels for his father’s new girlfriend when he finds himself home alone with her after he rejects his dad’s invitation for a boy’s night out. Yes, it is sensual. Yes, it is provocative. And yes, makes its audience confront the situation as do its protagonists. Lead actors are James Fraser, Maya Stange and Alan Dukes.
Does this mean Curious has moved away from making commercials? Most certainly not. “Even though we have courageously ventured into increasingly complex means of storytelling in the past year, we are first & foremost still grounded in the business of producing commercial content for Australian advertising agencies,” Curious' general manager, Peter Grasse, emphasised. “The fact is that Curious has been making inspired commercials for over ten years.” Their most recent advertising successess were the Foxtel Olympics promo for Clemenger BBDO Sydney and The Steinlager Pure spot for DDB New Zealand, in which the director, Taika Waititi, is also the star.
Still, It is proving to be another good year for Curious' film division. Syd Garon has been nominated for a 2012 Emmy Award in the category, Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft: Graphic Design & Art Direction for his recent title design and animation on HBO documentary, Superheroes.
It wasn't as though she closed her eyes and leapt. Producer, Susannah DiLallo, has some serious cred beneath her wings.
