Igniting passion is the overwhelming theme of the latest Burn instalment by Curious Film for the global roll out of Publicis Milan's Coca-Cola Burn energy drink campaign.
Produced by Tara Riddell at Curious with post production by Cutting Edge, Burn is a gritty four-minute film airing online, in-cinemas and at skateboard events globally.
Set in a housing estate in Buenos Aires of 15,000 people, director Ash Bolland said the space was full of shapes, fences, overpasses and dumpsters ideal for skateboarding.
"There’s no nature in sight. The housing estate contains all these crazy concrete shapes and surfaces and that’s what skateboarding’s about. I really wanted it to look like a concrete jungle that feels very raw," said Bolland.
The film about four young skateboarder's and the fuel that feeds their drive to "chase it, feed it and make it stronger" features professional European skateboarders Rune Glifberg, Jonas Skroder, Hugo Maillard and Dany Hamard.
As a skater Bolland was committed to authenticity. Almost every scene seen in the film is real including tricks, fire and debris with the tornado the only CGI exception.
"Professional skaters spend their lives travelling the world, crashing on people’s apartment floors," Bolland said.
"It's a grass roots profession, and I wanted to depict it in an authentic way, which is why the film opens with one of the guys falling off his board. There's something about starting off with a failure that instantly makes it a lot more honest.”
The producers said the film was about sacrifice, failure, determination and resilience. The encroaching storm is a metaphor for everything in life that holds us back, for saying f*** it and smashing though to the other side.
Bolland said he loved directing and the process of bringing something to life.
"Making something that people have not seen before – something that will make them look at life a little differently. I love the idea of creating work that can affect people on an emotional level. That makes all the hard work worth it."
