The latest spot for the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) is designed to inform motorcyclists that their risk of injury or death is 38 percent higher than other motorists.
To drive the message home, Kelleher takes the audience on a nail-biting journey as the camera races between passing cars and swerves to avoid passing trucks and pedestrians.
“My challenge was to make the visuals appear seamless by showing 5 different riders in 5 different scenarios on 5 different bikes,” says Kelleher.
“In some scenes we were able to shift that perspective from or to an observing driver, passenger or another rider. That way, when the ultimate crash takes place it is you the viewer who feels the impact.
The greatest accolade I have heard from experienced riders is that it’s horribly realistic and deadly accurate."
To capture each rider’s point of view, Kelleher chose the SI2K digital lens system, which allowed him to get as close as physically photographically possible to reality.
The commercial opens as a young man climbs onto his motorbike and pulls onto a suburban street, swerving to avoid other motorists. The camera transitions to the perspective of other motorbike riders, mimicking the movements of their eyes and heads to demonstrate their extreme vulnerability as they swerve to avoid objects in their path.
In a dramatic climax, the last motorcyclist skids off his bike towards a passing truck as the words are heard: ‘It’s up to you to reduce risks’.
The commercial was created by Nigel Dawson and Pete Becker at Grey Worldwide, Melbourne.
