Born in Wellington, Michael Hall was raised in the Far North of New Zealand. During his late teens and early 20s, he spent his time sailing the world's oceans and getting lost throughout some remote parts of Eurasia, North America and North Africa. It was here that he discovered a love for capturing images on film.
Recipient of the 2006 Photographer of the Year, by The Federation of European Photographers, Hall has been a professional photographer for over 20 years. He has worked throughout Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
Coming from a travel and editorial photography background, all of his work features a strong element of location and exquisite qualities of light and craft. His fine art work is captured on colour negative film, using a large format technical camera.
Hall has recently worked on a personal project, documenting the causes and effects of climate change brought about by the burning of fossil fuels.
His work is featured in the ACMP Collections, he holds a triple gold master of photography with the NZIPP, and he judges regularly at the Australian and the New Zealand Photography Awards. In 2004, Hall was awarded the Canon New Zealand Architectural Photographer of the Year Award and his work is regularly featured in PDN, Communication Arts and Graphis.
