Kent Matthews (4)

After a foundation art course, Matthews had to make a decision to either follow his passion for photography or pursue his love for ceramics.

Ultimately it was the lure of the exciting lifestyle of a photographer, as opposed to the less glamorous life of a potter, which tipped the balance.

A decision well made as his talents in photography have taken him on an exciting roller coaster to over 20 different countries in the past 15 years, shooting fashion, music and advertising.

Matthews graduated in Photographic Arts at the University of Westminster in 1994 and started out as a freelance assistant. After five years assisting, he began shooting fashion and portraits for editorial titles such as Sleaze Nation, Untold, Trace, Marie Claire, and the UK Sunday supplements.

In recent years, Matthews has dedicated more time to gallery based projects. He has contributed many times to the "gallery space" 125 magazine and has taken part in its international exhibitions.

His debut show in Australia 'Bondi Nightscapes' held at the Blender Gallery, Sydney, went on to win a place in the Px3 water competition and has recently been exhibited in New York and Paris.

His artwork is now represented here by unitedgalleries.com.au

He is currently working on two new projects. Firstly a book project with Bestival, an extravagant fancy dress festival in the United Kingdom from which these photos are taken. The second is a portrait project of Australia in conjunction with Costal Watch and Surfer magazine.

Recent commercial work includes shoots for Bacardi, British Telecom, Cadburys, and Mini Cooper and recent portraits include Lilly Allen, Florence and the Machine, Mika, Groove Armada, Guy Maestri and Danni Minogue. He has also started making pots again.
