At the age of 31 Lew Keilar sold his share in his mensewear shop to his brother and moved from a small town near Byron Bay with his wife and son to Sydney. Keilar had been accepted as one of 200 into the then presitigous Randwick TAFE's graphic design course.
So begins his unorthodox entry into Illustration.
After graduating, Keilar was worked as an assistant to an illustrator in Balmain.
Keilar said, "My self-taught skills in airbrush illustration were honed by long hours and a critical mentor, Peter Bollinger. I got a working understanding of the illustrator’s role as provider of images to advertising, publishing, event-management and design clients."
Keilar has been working as a freelance illustrator ever since but still feels he's just discovered his own style.
"It’s only recent that I did what some artists have done at a much earlier period in their working life and that is, to find their ‘voice’ or style. Still, better to do this at 53 than not at all."
